I’ve been enjoying my weekly pop culture writing classes, which mostly involve a lot of writing feedback and workshops. As I’ve mentioned before, teaching is something I’ve been interested in since I attended New York University for my MFA. After some urging, I wanted to offer a class on pop culture writing and personal essays at a lower price point.
For one day, we’ll focus on developing a voice, writing criticism that feels alive, and finding the intersection of memoir, pop culture, and reporting. This will be a larger class, so there won’t be personal feedback or workshopping, but there will be a lecture, generative writing exercises, and also a Q&A at the end where I’ll cover any questions on writing and pitching for media outlets, and writing and selling a book (my book Pure Innocent Fun sold at auction for six figures).
Pop Culture As Craft
Saturday, November 7 via Zoom, 12-3 PM EST
$95 Early Bird till October 30 (E-mail to sign up)
What can pop culture teach us about writing? How can movies, TV, music, books, and celebs become material for our own work? How can writing about the things we love (or love to hate!!) help us develop character and voice?
In this generative workshop, we’ll explore the ways pop culture can function as a creative tool instead of just a subject. Through close reading, discussion, and a series of generative writing exercises, participants will use their own pop culture touchstones and prompts for creating new work. No expertise in creative writing is required! Just have a love for discussing what you’re obsessed with.
